Argolis – Sparta – Olympia – Delphi – Osios Loukas
Day 1
Your driver will pick you up at your accommodation and drive you to Peloponnesus peninsula, in the south of Greece. First stop, the Corinth Canal, an engineering marvel whose construction began in the late 19th century. We’ll take a 30-minute stop there, so you can take some pictures and enjoy a cup of coffee.
Next stop, Ancient Corinth. One of the most powerful city-states of the ancient world, Corinth was the epicenter of several important historic events. You will have 1.5 hour to explore the archaeological site and the museum.
The most notable sight in the area is the Temple of Apollo which dates back to the 6th century B.C. and belongs to the Doric order of architecture. The city of Corinth is also the place where St. Paul gave his famous speech in the Agora. That is why he is the patron saint of the city.
Other notable sights are the fountains of Glauke and Peirene, the theater, the marketplace and many other Roman buildings. The museum’s displays include some fine specimens of ancient Corinthian pottery and mosaics.
Our next stop is the city of Mycenae, the seat of power of one of the Trojan War factions. You will enter the citadel through the Lion Gate. The citadel is surrounded by the Cyclopean walls, thought to have been built by the mythical Cyclops due to the enormous size of the stone blocks that they’re made of.
The Archaeological Museum of Mycenae offers interesting insight into the everyday life of the era. And, of course, visiting the Tomb of Agamemnon is mandatory. You will have 30 minutes to explore these places.
Next, we will visit the world-renowned ancient theater of Epidaurus. Built in the 4th century B.C., the theater is known for its amazing acoustics. It hosts plays even to this day. It is located on the southeast end of the sanctuary that is dedicated to the Greek god of medicine, Asclepius.
You’ll have the opportunity to explore the sanctuary for an hour and a half, after which we’ll be off to Nafplion, a beautiful seaside town and the first capital of the modern Greek state. We will be spending the night there.
Day 2
Breakfast in Nafplion, followed by a tour of its most important sights, including Akronafplia and the fortress of Palamidi, before we head off to Sparta.
Two hours later we’ll be arriving at Sparta, one of the most important and powerful city-states of the ancient world. You may choose to visit the Museum of Olive and find out how this valuable plant has been cultivated through the centuries. You should take the opportunity to visit the Tomb of King Leonidas, famous for his stand at Thermopylae.
The tour continues at the beautiful ancient town of Mystras. Hailing back to the Byzantine era, the town’s castle has been declared a World Heritage Monument by UNESCO.
Then we’ll be off to Bassae, where we’ll visit the temple of Apollo Epicurius before heading off to Olympia.
Olympia is the most important sanctuary of the ancient world and birthplace of the Olympic Games, which were first held in 776 B.C. in honor of the god Zeus.
Some of the most popular sights in Olympia are the temples of Zeus and Hera, and the Stadium with an impressive capacity of 45,000. And, of course, the museum, with the world-renowned statue of Hermes.
We will be spending the night in Olympia.
Day 3
After visiting the archaeological site of Olympia, we’ll be off to Delphi. Before arriving at Delphi, we will make a stop at the beautiful seaside town of Nafpaktos for lunch. After an additional 1.5 hour on the road, we’ll finally arrive in the navel of the world, Delphi.
We will be spending the night in the village of Delphi.
Day 4
Starting off the day with a tour of Delphi.
Delphi was the most important sanctuary of the ancient world. It was the seat of the high priestess of Apollo and oracle, Pythia, whose prophecies even affected state policies. The site is full of tributes from all over Greece.
Among the sights that you’ll have a chance to visit there, are the Temple of Apollo, the Castalian Spring, the Temple of Athena Pronaia, the theatre and the stadium.
The museum hosts several world-renowned exhibits, such as the Statue of Antinous and the Charioteer of Delphi.
Our first stop will be the walled monastery of Hosios Loukas and the village of Cheronea. First you’ll get the chance to explore the picturesque village of Arachova, and right after that we will be visiting the monastery of Hosios Loukas.
You will have 1,5 hour to explore the monastery, which is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Built in the early 10th century, it is the largest surviving monastery of the Middle Byzantine Period. Its mosaics and architecture are sure to impress you.
After a lunch break where you’ll be able to enjoy traditional Greek cuisine, we will be leaving for Athens.
We will make a final stop at Cheronia, where you will visit the “Lion of Cheronia”, a monument to the battle that took place there in 338 B.C., before resuming our trip back to Athens and your accommodation.
