Argolis – Olympia – Vasses – Delphi – Meteora
Day 1
Your driver will pick you up at your accommodation and drive you to Peloponnesus peninsula, in the south of Greece. First stop, the Corinth Canal, an engineering marvel whose construction began in the late 19th century. We’ll make a 30-minute stop there, so you can snap some pictures and enjoy a cup of coffee.
Next stop, Ancient Corinth. One of the most powerful city-states of the ancient world, Corinth was the epicenter of several important historic events. You will have 1.5 hour to explore the archaeological site and the museum.
The most notable sight in the area is the Temple of Apollo which dates back to the 6th century B.C. and belongs to the Doric order of architecture. The city of Corinth is also the place where St. Paul gave his famous speech in the Agora. That is why he is the patron saint of the city.
Other notable sights are the fountains of Glauke and Peirene, the theater, the marketplace and many other Roman buildings. The museum’s displays include some fine specimens of ancient Corinthian pottery and mosaics.
Our next stop is the city of Mycenae, the seat of power of one of the Trojan War factions. You will enter the citadel through the Lion Gate. The citadel is surrounded by the Cyclopean walls, thought to have been built by the mythical Cyclops due to the enormous size of the stone blocks that they’re made of.
The Archaeological Museum of Mycenae offers interesting insight into the everyday life of the era. And, of course, visiting the Tomb of Agamemnon is mandatory. You will have 30 minutes to explore these places.
Next, we will visit the world-renowned ancient theater of Epidaurus. Built in the 4th century B.C., the theater is known for its amazing acoustics. It hosts plays even to this day. It is located on the southeast end of the sanctuary that is dedicated to the Greek god of medicine, Asclepius.
You’ll have the opportunity to explore the sanctuary for an hour and a half, after which we’ll be off to Nafplion, a beautiful seaside town and the first capital of the modern Greek state. Explore its cobbled alleys and its most important sights, including Akronafplia and the fortress of Palamidi.
Next, your driver will take you to Olympia, where you’ll be spending the night.
Day 2
Your day starts with a tour of the archaeological site of Olympia, the most important sanctuary of the ancient world and birthplace of the Olympic Games, which were first held in 776 B.C. in honor of the god Zeus. You will also visit the archaeological museum with its many impressive exhibits, including the famous statue of Hermes. After that, we’re off to Delphi.
Before arriving at Delphi, we will make a stop at the beautiful seaside town of Nafpaktos for lunch. After an additional 1.5 hour on the road, we’ll finally arrive in the navel of the world, Delphi.
Delphi was the most important sanctuary of the ancient world. It was the seat of the high priestess of Apollo and oracle, Pythia, whose prophecies even affected state policies. The site is full of tributes from all over Greece.
Among the sights that you’ll have a chance to visit there, are the Temple of Apollo, the Castalian Spring, the Temple of Athena Pronaia, the theatre and the stadium.
The museum hosts several world-renowned exhibits, such as the Statue of Antinous and the Charioteer of Delphi.
We will be spending the night in the village of Delphi.
Day 3
You’ll have breakfast in Delphi, you’ll visit the archaeological site, and then we’ll be heading off to Meteora. After a scenic 3.5 hour drive, we’ll reach the town of Kalabaka where you’ll have lunch.
We will be spending the night in Kalabaka.
Day 4
Our first stop for the day is Meteora, an impressive rock formation which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The numerous monasteries in the area seem to be hanging precariously from the huge pillars of rock they were built on. You can hike up to three of them, enjoying the beautiful, natural trails on the way.
On our way back, we will make a stop at Thermopylae, where you’ll be able to visit the site and learn everything about the historic battle that took place there in 480 B.C.
We will make one last stop at Kamena Vourla with its fish taverns and traditional Greek cuisine, before driving back to your accommodation.
