2 Days Tour
Argolis – Mystras
Day 1
Your chauffeur will be waiting in the street outside your accommodation. You are about to embark on a magnificent road trip to the Peloponnese, which is full of hidden breathtaking locations!
With a 30-minute stop at the Corinth Canal, a par excellence marvel of engineering, you will have the time to walk around, pose for pictures and enjoy your coffee, before we resume riding through the countryside.
As we now head towards Sparta, take the time to go back in history and recall this most important city-state of the Antiquity with its legendary King Leonidas, a man of great courage and a significant warrior. The modern town boasts the Olive Tree and
Greek Olive Oil Museum, whose objective is to narrate the history of the olive tree and olive oil production in Greece. You will also find in Sparta a host of ancient ruins, among which the very tomb of King Leonidas himself. The journey from Corinth to
Sparta by car has a duration of approximately 2 hours.
The region is home to a medieval fortified town, called Mystras, a must-see Unesco World Heritage site. After we visit the Byzantine ruins, including the fortress, palace, churches, and monasteries, we will have lunch at a nearby tavern and then leave for Nafplion to stay overnight.
Day 2
On day 2 of the trip you will have enough time to discover what makes Nafplion unique: the Palamidi and the Acronafplia forts along with the Bourtzi, which provides the perfect backdrop for your morning tour.
Next we set off for Epidaurus, the birthplace of Asclepios, son of Apollo and god of medicine and healing. The area houses his sanctuary as well as a great theatre of the 4 th century BCE, famous for its acoustics and still in use. Enjoy in Epidaurus a one to
two-hour stop to explore the archaeological site and the museum.
Then we leave for Mycenae and will have one full hour there to roam around the acropolis with its astounding Cyclopean walls and the Lion Gate. According to Pausanias, a traveler and geographer of ancient times, the fortifications were built by Cyclops, the one-eyed creatures of Greek mythology.
Mycenae is also tightly connected to the Trojan War through King Agamemnon, the leader of the expedition, whose tomb–also known as the Treasury of Atreus–lies within walking distance of the citadel. After we visit this famous beehive tomb, we will have lunch at a nearby tavern and then go on with our 30-minute drive to Corinth.
Ancient Corinth will be the final leg of our tour. A major Greek city-state in ancient times, Corinth was the theatre of many historical events and other famous episodes.
The site hosts a 6 th century BCE Doric Temple of Apollo, one of the oldest extant sanctuaries in Greece, which is better known for its columns, each one of them curved out of a single block of stone. Ancient Corinth is also a place of Christian interest; in its Roman Agora you will have the chance to visit the Bema, that is the platform from which Paul the Apostle spoke to the Corinthians in the year 52 CE.
Other well-known features of the area are the Fountain of Glauke, Peirene, an Asklepieion, a Roman Odeon, an ancient theatre and much more. The whole setting resonates with myths and legends pointing to the dominance of Corinth from ancient times on.
End of tour and return at your accommodation in Athens.
