Meteora Day Trip
Your driver will be waiting for you at the lobby of your accommodation early in the morning. Soon you will be on your way to Meteora.
Meteora is an impressive rock formation which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The numerous monasteries in the area seem to be hanging precariously from the huge pillars of rock they were built on, forming a complex that’s second only to Mount Athos.
The first monasteries in the area were built in as early as the 10th century AD. The complex kept growing, up until the 17th century. Six monasteries are open to the public.
Apart from being an important architectural site, Meteora is a hiker’s paradise. Take some time to hike up the natural trails. The view is nothing short of breathtaking!
On our way back to Athens, we’ll make a stop at Thermopylae, where a handful of Spartans and their allies made their stand against the vastly superior invading army of the Persians, in 480 B.C. A monument in honor of King Leonidas of Sparta has been erected on the spot.
Over the course of millenia, the terrain has changed significantly due to erosion. A visit at the Historical Information Center of Thermopylae on site will help you understand every aspect of this historic event.
You’ll have plenty of time to reflect upon what you saw and learned today, in your relaxing ride back to Athens.
